Lilith’s Locs, founded by Erin Mikkelsen, is a distinctive hair salon that stands out in the community. Whether it’s ordering a set of hand-crafted dreadlock extensions, starting a dread journey, or getting a funky new cut and color, Lilith’s Locs is a salon dedicated to helping every client feel special.
Erin’s journey exemplifies the power of hard work, creativity, and perseverance. Specializing in dreadlocks and dreadlock extensions since 2014, Lilith’s Locs is unique, in part due to Erin’s exceptional eye for color and color theory. She handcrafts the wool dreads used on her clients and uses a crochet hook method for installation, allowing her to cater to all hair types and textures. Each of her dreadlock creations are hand-dyed by Erin as well, resulting in beautifully rich, one-of-a-kind artistry to wear in your hair.
Erin’s passion for her craft was ignited in her childhood, growing up in an artistic family with her father, a photographer, and her mother, a painter. This creative environment instilled in her a love for art and entrepreneurship. She began her business by making, selling, and installing her unique wool dreadlocks from her home and traveling to festivals and the Bristol Renaissance Faire to sell her creations. Her dedication paid off as she garnered a substantial client base, allowing her to continue her business from home.
In 2017, Erin took a significant leap of faith by opening her first salon in the Heritage Building in Manitowoc. Her reputation for beautiful products and installations grew, attracting clients from all over the mid-west and even as far away as Pittsburgh! So, realizing the need for a larger space, Erin and her husband, Josh, sought the help of Progress Lakeshore and Ray York of the Small Business Development Center to help develop a plan to expand the business.
One of her biggest challenges came when she needed financing to purchase a new building. Even armed with a solid business plan and a thriving business, Erin was turned down by 15 banks. She continued to pitch her idea, and eventually, Tom Hansen and Cleveland State Bank saw the potential and provided the necessary financing for Lilith’s Locs to expand. So, in 2020, Erin purchased her current building on 10th Street and began the process of transforming it into a beautiful space to care for her clients. Not only did she successfully open a new and expanded Lilith’s Locs, but Erin also exceeded her three-year projections within the first year at her new location! She could not be where she is today without her husband, Josh. He is an integral part of the day-to-day business.
Another challenge Erin had to address was her strong desire to give. She describes herself as eager to help others whenever she can, however, this inclination sometimes needs to be balanced with the realities of managing a business. Luckily, her husband plays an important role in keeping her grounded and helping her maintain a focus on her business goals.
Erin’s story is a testament to dedication and perseverance. Her advice is clear: don’t give up when you know your plan is solid, do your research and be educated on whatever journey you are undertaking, surround yourself with good people who believe in you, and don’t be afraid to ask for help.
Congratulations Erin and Lilith’s Locs, on building such an amazing business and being an inspiration to other entrepreneurs and creatives!
